What a Wonderful World!

Mohammad Omar Farooq (July 7, 1999)

Salaam and greetings.

I am not a poet. But in everything I see opening my eyes, in everything I hear just lending my ear; in everything I feel with my mind, I enjoy the nature and the world as poetry of the ultimate creative pen. From myself to all my dear ones, my parents and relatives, my friends and acquaintances, those whom I know and whom I don't, from the breezy wind to the tastes of fruits (yes, including mango), there are times when I want to say and I want to sing "What a wonderful world." But someone has already said it, and said so beautifully; someone has already sung it, and sung so wonderfully.

One song that made a permanent impression on me since when I was young was Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World [lyricist of this song were: George Weiss & Bob Thiele, both late]. Words can't be substitutes for a song, but if you have not heard it, appended is the Lyrics. This beautiful summer morning, after offering my Fajr prayer, I looked through the window. Inside my wonderful daughter Nawaal (8; means "gift") was sleeping. I was enamored by her sleeping face. I looked out again. It was so beautiful. This morning I wanted to do something. Please forgive my unconscionable, crude attempt. I tried to render Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World in Bangla. Following is the original lyric and its Bangla rendering. Please remember I have attempted to translate only the words. You have to listen to the song to savor the feeling.

What a Wonderful World

by Louis Armstrong

I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.

The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do
They're really saying I love you.

I hear babies cry, I watch them grow
They'll learn much more than I'll never know
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
Yes I think to myself what a wonderful world.

A Thought for Everyday:

WHAT HAVE I THOUGHT,

WHAT HAVE I SAID/WRITTEN,

WHAT HAVE I DONE TODAY

TO KEEP THIS WONDERFUL WORLD WONDERFUL?
