Key Qur'anic Verses
9. Guardianship of each gender"The believers, men and women, are AWLIYA (protectors, guardians, patrons), one of another; they enjoin what is Ma'roof and forbic what is Munkar; they observe regular prayers, practise regular charity, and obey God and His Apostle. On them will God pour His mercy, for God is Exalted in power, Wise." [9/al-Tauba/71]
Note: The gender relationship in Islam is not that one gender is dominant over the other or superior to another. Rather, the relationship is epitomized as Awliya (protectors, guardians, patrons) of each other. Understanding the gender relationship helps in a fundamental way to cast the issues and problems of gender relationship in a whole new perspective.
