Key Qur'anic Verses
6. Respect for others' lives, and life in general"On that account: We ordained for the Children of Israel that if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land, it would be as if he slew the whole people; and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people. Then although there came to them Our Apostles with clear signs, yet, even after that, many of them continued to commit excesses in the land." [5/al-Maidah/32]
Note: Life is the essence of our existence and it is the most fundamental divine endowment. Thus, we must have fundamental respect for life. It is no wonder that nurturing and cherishing life is of paramount importance. This applies to to our as well as others' lives. Life in general is to be respected. First, we must not take any life, except by accident, mistake or in defense of justice. More importantly, whenever possible, we must seek opportunities and means to save lives. It is unfortunate that Muslims believe that Islam has sanctified life and saving life, yet so little has been done, especially, in past centuries to save lives. There are non-Muslims who are coming up with vaccines that are savings millions of lives. They are coming up with devices and methods that save lives. Yes, they also have equally horrifying destructive power to take lives and many of them actually do. But Muslims need to foster their own consciousness about life and its sanctity and contribute toward the welfare of humanity by building a culture and consciousness that cherishes and saves lives whenever possible.
