Key Qur'anic Verses

5. Non-hostility

"... Let there be NO HOSTILITY except against those who practice oppression." [2/al-Baqara/193]

Note: This verse of general scope might be the starting point of all human relationship. It has two dimensions. First, as a norm, we as Muslims don't have any hostility against anyone except those who practice oppression. How close is relationship between different individuals or groups may depend on many factors. But the bottom line norm is non-hostility. Any Muslims who generally show hostility to anyone, except those practice oppression, violates this important precept from the Qur'an. The scope of this verse is universal, that is, regardless of religion, nationality, gender, language, color, etc. Thus, we don't have any hostility against any Christian, Jew, Hindu, atheist, or communist. Second, we as Muslims do have problems with those who practice oppression. We don't and won't practice oppression: that is what is expected of Muslims. However, the demand of this verse is one step further. We will oppose any kind of oppression inflicted upon anyone.
