Key Qur'anic Verses

13. Cooperation in good deeds and non-cooperation with evil deeds

"...help (cooperate) one another in matters of Birr and Taqwa; and do not help (cooperate) in Ithm (sin) and transgression...." [5/al-Maida/3]

Note: As a corollary to delivering the message of truth and then seeking common grounds, Islam also teaches cooperation among all in matters of Birr and Taqwa. We also are taught non-cooperation when it comes to sin and transgression. Thus, if there is an appropriate issue that from Islamic viewpoint is a Birr (virtuous act), we can cooperate with anyone - Christian, Hindu, Atheist, and what not - to enhance that Birr. Just as we can work together to remove poverty and destitution, we can also work together with others against problems such as alcoholism, drugs, domestic violence. If this is what we can and should with others, just imagine at what level REAL, proactive, cooperation should exist among Muslims. Muslims need to understand that relationship should not merely exist at the level of ideas, concepts, aqeedahs as we interpret and understand; beyond that we should also try to find ways to cooperate in matters of Birr and Taqwa (God-consciousness). It is a common tendency that we might find ninety-nine things in common and one thing to disagree and we actually emphasize that one thing for justifying our distance and non-cooperation. Let us reverse it. Those who seek cooperation for the betterment, they seek "one" excuse to cooperate, rather than "one" excuse not to.
