Key Prophetic Statements

The entire treasure of Hadith or Prophetic statements is to help us to mold our life, the best we can and want to, in light of the life of the Prophet Muhammad (s). Thus, every single authentic Hadith has importance of varying degree. I have here chosen just ten such Hadiths to take our initial steps in molding our life according to Islam. Selection of these few Hadith in no way belittle or ignores other Hadiths. The few Hadiths I have chosen here have very broad implications and assimilating the significance of these few Hadiths can take us a long way to improve our lives. But there is more. Fulfilling the requirement of these Hadith inevitably involves positively touching other lives in whatever small way it might be.

1. Your Islam should mean safety for the PEOPLE!

A person asked, O Prophet of God (p), whose Islam is excellent or the best (afdal)? He replied: "From whose tongue and hands the people (an-nas: irrespective of Muslims or non-Muslims) are safe." [Musnad-i-Ahmad, #6762; narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr]

2. Get your answers ready for five questions!

Narrated Ibn Mas'ud (r), the Prophet (s) said, "No one on the Day of Judgment would be able to move a bit until they answer to five questions they would be asked: How did he spend his life? How did he utilize his youth? How did he earn his wealth? How did he spend it? And, how did he practice what he learnt? [Sunan al-Tirmizi, Vol. 4, #2424]

3. Balance and moderation are essential to Islam: Practice it, preach it!

Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Prophet (p), "Leave me as I leave you, for the people who were before you were ruined because of their questions and their differences over their prophets. So, if I forbid you to do something, then keep away from it. And if I order you to do something, then do of it as much as you can." [Sahih al-Bukhari; Vol. 9, #391]

4. Value five things before five things!

Narrated by Amr ibn Maimun (r): while advising a person the Prophet (s)
said: "Value five things before five things: youth before senility, health before illness, solvency before poverty, free time before getting busy, and life before death."

[This hadith is authentic. It is reported both by the Companion Amr ibn Maimun as well as by Abdullah ibn Abbas. It is recorded in a number of early hadith works although most of these are not that well known to people outside the field of hadith: Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi's book Iqtida al-Ilm (no.170), Ibn al-Mubarak in Az-Zuhd (no.2), Al-Bayhaqi in his Shu'ab al-Iman (2/3/240) and finally by Al-Haakim in Al-Mustadrak (4/306)].

5. Care for "womb" relationships

Narrated Aisha (r) that the Prophet (s) said, "The womb, i.e. blood relation, is suspended from the Throne of Allah and announces: 'Allah will hold by him who holds by me; and Allah will cut asunder from him who cuts asunder from me." [Sahih Muslim, #6198]

6. Have enjoyable family life!

Narrated Ibn Mas'ud: "Mix with the people on the condition that your Deen is not jeopardized, and be jestful with the family." [Sahih al-Bukhari, Chapter 81 on "To be cheerful with the people"]

7.  You CAN do good! It's easy.

Narrated Abu Hurairah: Rasulullah (p) said, "There is a Sadaqa to be given for every joint of the human body (as a sign of gratitude to Allah) everyday the sun rises. To judge justly between two persons is regarded as Sadaqa, and to help a person concerning his riding animal by helping him to ride it or by lifting his luggage on to it is also regarded as Sadaqa, a pleasant word is also Sadaqa, and every step taken on one's way to offer the compulsory prayer is also Sadaqa, and to remove a harmful thing from the way is also Sadaqa." [Sahih al-Bukhari: Vol.4, #232]
